Matices portuarios

Port nuances
(Excerpt from the text I illustrated, written by R. Arlt for the CRÍTICA newspaper between 1928 and 1932)*
You, who is getting bitter in an office with a boss that has you fed up;  you, who bends grumpily over a huge book like the Sahara; you, who is stultified every day by building columns of overwhelming  figures and writing down pyramidal sums as to wear down the gears of a machine to do the four fundamental operations; you, who is rotting of the counter...
(...) ...go; go to the port the day you are close to suicide, to despair or an attempted murder, and have a look. Nothing else... Go to the port. Go, and you'll appreciate my advice. In the port one can breathe. In the port one can drink landscapes. In the port one can recover the dreams of childhood. The port purifies the soul. In the port one learn to dream; to expect, as transatlantic liners expect. A lazy morning at the docks produces on the imagination  the same effects as a vitamin injection. The vigour of light lifts the lid of the heavens, which seem higher and more perfect. The space bends with joy over the rigging of steel masts and around the thin spider webs of radio antennas. You could say that even the air enters bubbling to the lungs as a gas, and one can breathe more freely, as if it was over to get rid of a damn oppression.
